Finding Out More About. . .

Escuela Superior de Español de Sagunto College (ESDES), occupies about 25 acres on a gentle slope overlooking the towns of Port Sagunto and Sagunto with the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. On a hilltop across a valley full of orange groves sit the remains of the fortress dating from before roman occupation in the first and second centuries B.C. This ever-present reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Spain helps give the ACA student a new perspective of time and history. The beautiful Mediterranean coast is only five miles away, and during the Summer session the students have frequent afternoon outings to enjoy the sun, sand and water at the local beaches. Approximately twenty miles southwest of Sagunto (and well connected by bus and train) lies Valencia, the third largest city of Spain. A little over 200 miles north is the bustling city of Barcelona with its many museums, and traveling the same distance westward will take you to Spain's capital, Madrid. A five-day tour of Castille (central Spain) is included in the summer program, as well as several day trips to local areas of interest. Students may connect to the Internet from each dorm as long as they bring their own laptop computer. In addition, there is a small computer lab available on campus. Each dormitory room has a phone so that students can call out or receive incoming calls. More information is given in the student handbook that students can download from www.esde-s.org. Text books are included in the fee for the summer session. A small store on campus provides refreshments and a few food items. Other shopping can be done in Sagunto or in Valencia. Bicycles are available to ACA students for short trips into town, and on Friday afternoons a bus will go from the school into town for shopping. ACA students going to Sagunto are advised to purchase plane tickets and check their bags through to Valencia, unless of course they are planning to travel before the summer course and will be arriving by train or bus. A Notice of Arrival Form is provided in the ACA admission packet; if ESDES receives this form by e-mail, fax or postal mail five days before your arrival, someone from the school will meet you and take you to ESDES at no extra charge. You may also go to the ACA web page, click on Preparing to Travel, Arrival Form, and submit your arrival information directly to the international ACA program director. If a fax number or e-mail address is provided on the form, ESDES will confirm reception of the information. The school will also provide transportation to the train station or airport at the end of the course. If you prefer to come on your own, detailed arrival information is given in the ESDES student handbook, which will be sent to all Sagunto students after their admission to the program. Please be sure to send the Notice of Arrival form even if you do not require transportation so that the school will know when to expect your arrival on campus. These are the average high and low temperatures for Valencia during the months of June, July and August: June July August 80/58°F 87/62°F 85/62°F 27/15°C 30/17°C 29/17°C During the summer session, students receive 120 hours of formal instruction. Except as otherwise announced, classes are held in the morning from Monday to Friday, leaving the afternoon and evening for study and recreation. Each group of 6/7 students are assigned to a Spanish tutor who works with students during the afternoons and evenings to help them with their homework assignments and with their Spanish-speaking skills during meals, recreation and free-time. Since ESDES is on the same campus as the Spanish Adventist Seminary of theology, students with an advanced level of Spanish may request permission from the Theological Seminary to enroll in any of the classes offered which may be compatible with their schedule. If permission is granted, ACA students will be expected to meet the same requirements as the other theology students. Any student interested in this program should ask the ESDES Director about the courses offered. All students must participate in the cultural tours which are an integral part of the instructional program. Record will be taken and specific assignments given. Students' completion of these assignments and positive participation in the tour will affect their overall grade in the courses for which they are enrolled. |
